Ringing Rocks State Park

This new place to ride was added to our database by Thomas Jones.

Type of Ride: Hangout
Remember to take a hammer! This is cool... Ringing Rocks Park is a 128 acre park nestled in the woods in Upper Black Eddy. Located within the park is a field of boulders, about 7-8 acres in size, that have an unusual property. When the rocks are struck with a hammer or another rock, they sound as if they are metal and hollow and ring with a sound similar to a metal pipe being struck. The park also has Bucks County's largest waterfall.

New Motorcycle Guide for Nevada

Guide to Nevada for motorcycle riders!Nevada Magazine has released a new edition of the Nevada Rides Motorcycle Guide. Formerly published by the Nevada Commission on Tourism, the new edition offers maps of favorite roads plus motorcycling events.

The guide is offered online or on paper as a pocket-sized 29 page reference. In addition to boring stuff, like helmet laws, advertisements and such, the guide features rides in five sections of Nevada: Valley of Fire, Rock Canyon, Lake Tahoe, Lamoille Canyon and Lincoln County.

To view the free online version use the following link:

Nevada Rides Motorcycle Guide

Want More?
Of course you do. You can peruse other travel guides for the Silver State at www.travelnevada.com. My favorite reference for finding the road (or trail) less traveled is DeLorme's Nevada Atlas & Gazetteer series. If you're more interested in the Sierra Nevadas than Nevada the most spiffy take-along is Mad Maps' Gold Country Scenic Tours

And don't forget- after you find the best road in Nevada come back and post your favorite ride!

Palomar Mountain Road

This new place to ride was added to our database by Webmaster.

Type of Ride: Street
California Route 76 winds through the mountains of Cleveland National Forest just northeast of Escondido, California. It's been called Southern California's most technical road- and it just might be.

Smooth pavement makes for a great ride. Hairpins and tight switchbacks means you'd better leave the running boards at home! But watch for decreasing radius turns that could ruin your whole day.

Pick it up off I-15 and head east. When you get to Lake Henshaw, take a break then turn around and do it again!

Toledo Bend in Louisiana

This new place to ride was added to our database by Lynn T.

Type of Ride: Street
State Highway 191 from the Dam up to Zwolle is the prettiest. It had nice hills, few twisting turns, bridges across sections on Toledo Bend Lake. Very nice drive but but watch your speed (55 mph) for Louisiana State Police. I know the hard way!!

There are other pretty roads the turn off of 191- for example 474 is about 11 miles long (my favorite).

You will enjoy the ride.

Little River Canyon Rim Parkway

This new place to ride was added to our database by Billy.

Type of Ride: Street
Little River Falls is located partway between Ft. Payne, AL and Gaylesville, AL. on US Hwy 35.

Turn onto Hwy 176 near the bridge at the falls and follow the signs. At one point you have a choice to make at a stop sign. Fun to ride and very isolated.

Cyclemos Motorcycle Museum

This new place to ride was added to our database by Jen.

Type of Ride: Hangout
Nestled in the middle of Tennessee's most picturesque mountains is the town of Red Boiling Springs, home to Cyclemos Motorcycle Museum.

Every road leading to this quaint little mountain town, known for its historic bed and breakfasts, winds through rich farm land and beautiful mountain ranges. Not only is Cyclemos Motorcycle Museum the only motorcycle museum in the state, the local riding is the best that Tennessee has to offer.

Stay over night and enjoy the hospitable accommodations of any of the three historic bed and breakfast facilities in town (visit www.rbstn.com for more information on lodging).

If rows and rows of pristine, museum-quality restored motorcycles is what you are after, then this may not be your place. However, if you are interested in the "real McCoy", original antique bikes, then put this on your list of destinations.

Alachua County

This new place to ride was added to our database by James.

Type of Ride: Street
Fill up at the gas station at NE 53rd Av and NE SR 24 (Waldo Rd). From there head north on CR 225 (2-4 lanes). 225 is a very well-maintained road and is dead straight for several miles.

You will pass the Gainesville Raceway to your right, home of the NHRA Gatornationals. Continue on 225 as it curves around to the east. There are several sweeping turns here where you can really get on it (especially you sportbike riders). When you reach CR 1475 (2 lanes) take a right and head south. This road isn't the best surface but it is safe. It curves into the small town of Waldo, where you will continue straight across SR 24 (4 lanes, passing the Shell station on your right) until you hit US 301 (4 lanes, well-paved). Take a right headed south of 301 for a couple miles until you see a sign for 1469/1471. Take a left there and continue straight (the right fork) on 1469. Follow 1469 (2 lanes, well-paved) through Ellenton until you hit SR 26 (2 lanes).

Continue past SR 26 south on 1469. This section of road is pretty decent with a mix of curves and straight-aways. When you hit CR 219A (2 lanes, well-paved), take a right and follow that to CR 1474. Take a right headed west on 1474 (2 lanes, not the best surface) and follow that back to US 301. Continue on 1474 past 301 towards Windsor. When you hit CR 234 (2 lanes, not the best surface) you have two options. You can take a right headed north, coming to SR 26. Take a left headed west on SR 26 until you get to the SR 26/SR 222 split. Continue straight on 222 (2 lanes, well paved) and that winds into Gainesville.

When you reach the stop light, you can continue straight into Gainesville or just head north on NE Waldo Rd and you will arrive at your starting point on the left. The other option coming into Windsor at CR 234 is to take a left there headed south. That will bring you out on SR 20 (4 lanes). Take a right headed west on 20. This road is very wide and well-paved. It is mostly straight. Follow SR 20 several miles until you curve to the right. You will see Earl Powers Park on the right. You can rest there in the parking lot overlooking the lake if you want. Continue on 20 past the park until you see 329B (2 lanes, not the best surface, aka Lakeshore Dr) on your right. Take this north. This road winds around the edge of the lake and is quite scenic. It is not the longest stretch of road but it is worth riding Watch out for the 90 degree turn in the middle (there are signs for it). It usually has some loose sand on it.

When you reach the end of 329B you will hit SR 26. From there you have two options. You can turn left headed west into Gainesville, or if you want to extend your ride a little you can turn right headed NE. If you take the right, you will wind around and come to a flashing signal in a couple miles. Take a left here and take that road to SR 222. Then take the left westbound into Gainesville. Take this ride near sunset, I'd say starting 45-60 minutes prior. It is pretty, there is little traffic and nobody should bother you. This route is safe and recommended for all skill levels. This ride varies in time depending on how you ride. It can probably be completed in 45-60 minutes. I tolerated it on a sportbike no problem, with a passenger.

Blue Springs

This new place to ride was added to our database by Brenda Scott.

Type of Ride: Street

One of Missouri's least visited springs.

Travel Hwy 106 east from Eminence. You will pass Powder Mill (also worth a stop). Continuing east on Hwy 106 watch very closely for the Blue Springs turn off sign - it is easy to miss. Turn right onto a hard packed gravel road (you will travel 2.5 miles to spring).

Recommended mode of transportation is 4 wheels; however, this can be done by motorcycle. You will travel approximately 5 miles (round trip) on hard packed gravel, very curvy, narrow, washboardy and steep (especially on the trip back out). BUT... well worth a trip whether it be by cage or bike!

Amenities are limited to bathrooms and picnic tables.

This is one of Missouri's deepest springs and is located approximately 12 miles east of Eminence. The spring flows slowly from a very deep cave shaft that is situated at the base of a dolomite bluff.

Nine miles southeast of Eminence on Highway NN is Rocky Falls Shut-In. Rocky Falls is an impressive, steep cascading waterfall that pours into a large pool of water. This is a great place to have a picnic and explore the waterfall area and do some day hiking on the Ozark trail.

Falling Leaf Rally in Missouri

Potosi, MO— For four days the little town of Potosi hangs out the welcome sign for motorcycle riders from all over the country (and a few Canadians).

But if the town council was expecting a miniature Sturgis, well they're probably disappointed. Or thrilled depending on how you look at it. The whole weekend I did not see one smoky burnout or wet T-shirt contest. In fact, the women at this rally are more likely to pass you on the inside than show you their hooters.

I had never been to one of these BMW rallies before and wasn't quite sure what to expect. I was expecting everyone would be "touring" and paying close attention to the posted speed limit. Turns out, like most things motorcycle, the people and their machines span a wide spectrum and defy stereotyping. Sure there was the Iron Butt guy on a miniature land yacht watching satellite TV, and there was the pseudo-motocrosser polishing the gravel dust off his GS, but mostly it was all about getting out and riding. And I'm happy to report there are BMW riders that ride fast!

First off, not every bike in attendance was a BMW. Though mostly Teutonic, the hardware present was quite a menagerie. Sidecar rigs were popular, especially the Russian Urals. I noticed Ural riders seem to love to pull their bike into a spot that will force them to use the reverse gear just to show off the fact they have one.

The most popular non-BMW marque appeared to be Suzukis. The popularity of V-Stroms with this demographic seems to make them honorary Bayerische. But Bandits were plentiful too and even a fully-faired GT750 water buffalo was "two stroking" around the campgrounds.

Oh yeah, the camping. It appeared that a lot of these guys have never considered packing light. There were more trailers moving around the campground than in an Oklahoma thunderstorm. The variety (and scale) of the tents being erected was quite a sight.

But the highlight wasn't the camping, or the bikes, or the camaraderie, or even the anvil blast... it was the roads. Head off most any direction from Potosi and you'll find a good road. And contrary to popular belief, as I mentioned before, not all Beemer riders are slow pokes. I met some great folks and had some fast-paced fun carving up the granite roadbeds of Eastern Missouri.

Hats off to the Gateway BMW club and their efforts to make this great event happen.

Cushmans in Kinta

The R1150R in front of the Talimena Drive signBrad and I made a run down to the Talimena Drive last week. We headed down with cameras and gear to start collecting some video to eventually find it's way on to Places2ride.com. Watch for new videos to start popping up.

We unknowingly picked a great weekend to go— cooler weather and less traffic. In a week or so the leaves will start turning and the twisties will be crowded with Land Yachts full of gawkers. The lack of traffic was almost spooky– it was almost like we had the place to ourselves!

Cushmans gather before a ride around the San Bois MountainsWe took a meandering route south of Tulsa on US-64 and eventually to Oklahoma state highway OK-2. When we passed through Kinta, near the Sansbois Mountains, we noticed a slew of scooters milling around the VFW hall. Turned out the Oklahoma Cushman Club was having a big get-together. We stopped to ogle scooters of all varieties and enjoy the puka-puka of little flatheads.

I was surprised how many different models and engine variations Cushman had offered. They weren't just there for show either– these folks were riding them! Just as we arrived a large group was heading out to make a loop around Kinta to Wilburton and back. It was pretty cool seeing all these scooters on the highway.

"You see things vacationing on a motorcycle in a way that is completely different from any other. In a car you're always in a compartment, and because you're used to it you don't realize that through that car window everything you see is just more TV. You're a passive observer and it is all moving by you boringly in a frame."
