Maumee River - Route 65

This new place to ride was added to our database by Micah Maziar.

Type of Ride: Street

Route 65 is my favorite motorcycle road in NW Ohio. It is full of twisties and lots of hills and valleys. The road parallels the Maumee River.

You start in Perrysburg, Ohio, near Ft. Meigs and ride southwest bound. I usually turn around in the cool little town of Grand Rapids and head home.

Blue Springs

This new place to ride was added to our database by Brenda Scott.

Type of Ride: Street

One of Missouri's least visited springs.

Travel Hwy 106 east from Eminence. You will pass Powder Mill (also worth a stop). Continuing east on Hwy 106 watch very closely for the Blue Springs turn off sign - it is easy to miss. Turn right onto a hard packed gravel road (you will travel 2.5 miles to spring).

Recommended mode of transportation is 4 wheels; however, this can be done by motorcycle. You will travel approximately 5 miles (round trip) on hard packed gravel, very curvy, narrow, washboardy and steep (especially on the trip back out). BUT... well worth a trip whether it be by cage or bike!

Amenities are limited to bathrooms and picnic tables.

This is one of Missouri's deepest springs and is located approximately 12 miles east of Eminence. The spring flows slowly from a very deep cave shaft that is situated at the base of a dolomite bluff.

Nine miles southeast of Eminence on Highway NN is Rocky Falls Shut-In. Rocky Falls is an impressive, steep cascading waterfall that pours into a large pool of water. This is a great place to have a picnic and explore the waterfall area and do some day hiking on the Ozark trail.

U.S. Route 350

This new place to ride was added to our database on 1/15/2008.

Type of Ride: Street

Colorado's Route 350 is a U.S. highway that parallels the mountain leg of the historic Santa Fe Trail. Located entirely within the borders of Colorado, this highway meanders from Trinidad, CO eastward to La Junta, near US-50.

Trinidad is worth a stop for the well-preserved Victorian architecture and the WPA cabins at Monument Lake Resort.

This highway is open road of Americana. If you''re looking for twisties or adrenaline, this isn't the place. But this ride does offer the motorcyclist high-plains solitude in spades.

Falling Leaf Rally in Missouri

Potosi, MO— For four days the little town of Potosi hangs out the welcome sign for motorcycle riders from all over the country (and a few Canadians).

But if the town council was expecting a miniature Sturgis, well they're probably disappointed. Or thrilled depending on how you look at it. The whole weekend I did not see one smoky burnout or wet T-shirt contest. In fact, the women at this rally are more likely to pass you on the inside than show you their hooters.

I had never been to one of these BMW rallies before and wasn't quite sure what to expect. I was expecting everyone would be "touring" and paying close attention to the posted speed limit. Turns out, like most things motorcycle, the people and their machines span a wide spectrum and defy stereotyping. Sure there was the Iron Butt guy on a miniature land yacht watching satellite TV, and there was the pseudo-motocrosser polishing the gravel dust off his GS, but mostly it was all about getting out and riding. And I'm happy to report there are BMW riders that ride fast!

First off, not every bike in attendance was a BMW. Though mostly Teutonic, the hardware present was quite a menagerie. Sidecar rigs were popular, especially the Russian Urals. I noticed Ural riders seem to love to pull their bike into a spot that will force them to use the reverse gear just to show off the fact they have one.

The most popular non-BMW marque appeared to be Suzukis. The popularity of V-Stroms with this demographic seems to make them honorary Bayerische. But Bandits were plentiful too and even a fully-faired GT750 water buffalo was "two stroking" around the campgrounds.

Oh yeah, the camping. It appeared that a lot of these guys have never considered packing light. There were more trailers moving around the campground than in an Oklahoma thunderstorm. The variety (and scale) of the tents being erected was quite a sight.

But the highlight wasn't the camping, or the bikes, or the camaraderie, or even the anvil blast... it was the roads. Head off most any direction from Potosi and you'll find a good road. And contrary to popular belief, as I mentioned before, not all Beemer riders are slow pokes. I met some great folks and had some fast-paced fun carving up the granite roadbeds of Eastern Missouri.

Hats off to the Gateway BMW club and their efforts to make this great event happen.

Cushmans in Kinta

The R1150R in front of the Talimena Drive signBrad and I made a run down to the Talimena Drive last week. We headed down with cameras and gear to start collecting some video to eventually find it's way on to Places2ride.com. Watch for new videos to start popping up.

We unknowingly picked a great weekend to go— cooler weather and less traffic. In a week or so the leaves will start turning and the twisties will be crowded with Land Yachts full of gawkers. The lack of traffic was almost spooky– it was almost like we had the place to ourselves!

Cushmans gather before a ride around the San Bois MountainsWe took a meandering route south of Tulsa on US-64 and eventually to Oklahoma state highway OK-2. When we passed through Kinta, near the Sansbois Mountains, we noticed a slew of scooters milling around the VFW hall. Turned out the Oklahoma Cushman Club was having a big get-together. We stopped to ogle scooters of all varieties and enjoy the puka-puka of little flatheads.

I was surprised how many different models and engine variations Cushman had offered. They weren't just there for show either– these folks were riding them! Just as we arrived a large group was heading out to make a loop around Kinta to Wilburton and back. It was pretty cool seeing all these scooters on the highway.

"You see things vacationing on a motorcycle in a way that is completely different from any other. In a car you're always in a compartment, and because you're used to it you don't realize that through that car window everything you see is just more TV. You're a passive observer and it is all moving by you boringly in a frame."
