Great Shirt: Loud Valves Save Lives

Funny t-shirt: Loud Valves Save LivesI just had to share this- saw one at a rally a couple of weeks ago. Looks like the perfect t-shirt for every rider who still relies on pushrods and rocker arms!

Loud Valve Save Lives

Pretty gosh darn funny. And probably more effective than the noisemakers it's poking fun at.

New Features Added to Website and Blog

I wanted to update everyone on all the new stuff that has been going on here at Places 2 Ride. Most of this stuff happens behind the scenes and isn't visible to the average website user.

Listings on the Blog
You may have noticed a lot of new items showing up here on the blog.

We've recently added a feature to the listings of motorcycling events and places to ride that copies the information here. Each new entry is automatically posted here, on the Places 2 Ride blog, as well as our website. My intent here is to provide greater exposure for your organization's event, which increases the value of our free motorcycle events calendar to the motorcycling community.

So now whenever a new event or place is submitted to our site (and approved) it not only becomes a part of our huge directory- it's also posted here and included in our newsfeeds.

Really Simple What?
I'm a big fan of RSS. But for those of you that don't know your ASP from a hole in the ground, we've now made blog updates available via email.

The service is provided by Feedburner (recently acquired by Google) and sends a simple notice when new content is posted here. It will never be used to send spam and we do not share you address with anyone else. To sign up is a quick and easy two-step that begins like this...

Enter your email address:

Enjoy
I hope you enjoy these new features and keep coming back to visit often!

Ice Delays Tulsa Toy Run

Freezing rain was forecast for December 9th, and Tulsa ABATE members decided to postpone the Tulsa Toy Run one week due to the weather. But nobody imagined just how bad it might get. The huge ice storm, which we dubbed Oklahoma's Centennial Blackout, crippled much of the state last week. Nearly a quarter million homes were without power in Tulsa alone, as ice weighed down trees and snapped power lines.

But despite the elements and logistical nightmares, hundreds of riders showed up and ABATE's 28th annual toy run really did happen.

Since the planned destination at Expo Square was full of electrical work crews, the route was changed to go downtown where a Fed Ex truck awaited the donations. Tulsa Police had their hands full with looters and snarled traffic so the route was not closed as in years past. Instead the bikes were sent out in groups of a few dozen or so to commingle with traffic along Riverside Drive. But the end result was the same— lots of toys were donated for needy children in the Tulsa area.

Gift Ideas for Your Motorcyclist

Motorcycle T-ShirtWe've updated our annual Holiday Gift Guide with some cool new stuff the biker on your holiday list is sure to appreciate. You'll find a wide range of gear to fit most any budget— from the Bikemaster digital tire gauge (under $20) to the Tom Tom Rider, a GPS designed specifically for motorcycles (about $600).

A couple of our picks may look familiar. That's because they were also on the list last year's list.

Books like Proficient Motorcycling have become such standards that any rider would benefit from reading it. And should. We also repeated the Rand McNally guide North American Ride Atlas, now in its second edition. For more of our picks check our favorite motorcycle magazines, books and videos.

One night I was at a party and a thunderstorm was moving in. I decided it was time to leave before I got wet.

"Better go, I have to ride home," I announced.

A friend piped up, "You mean you get to ride home."

I always thought that was cool.
We also have some shirt designs of our own that you might consider when gift-giving. These exclusive Places 2 Ride designs feature our retro cafe racer image on the front and a larger image on the back.

Across the back is the slogan, "I get to ride home," to let cagers know you aren't driving the minivan. Perfect for wearing to work on casual Fridays! See the sidebar for the story behind this design.

This new design is available on a basic tee, long sleeve, jersey, baby doll and fitted tees. For more motorcycle-related T-shirts visit our Biker Shirts page.

More Help in the Quest for Maps

New Mapquest Beta Adds Helpful Tools for Planning Routes
Last week I was checking our links directory to weed out broken links and outdated sites (this is a constant chore– visitors like you can help by submitting broken links when you find them). While going through the Maps section I was surprised at how many mapping sites had either gone away or stopped offering free online maps. But what caught my eye that day was an invitation from Mapquest to try the new Beta version of their route planning tool: "Need directions beyond Point to Point B?"

Why yes I do. Sometimes.

Back when Google rolled out their maps tool I was impressed. Then they offered Google Earth and I was impressed even more. So impressed, I haven't really looked at any other mapping web sites in recent history. That's why I wasn't all that optimistic when I launched Mapquest's new Route Builder. Then I caught a little checkbox near the bottom of the route window that changed my mind forever. Avoid Highways.

Now I was getting interested. I plugged in a few cities and towns, changed their order and selected "avoid highways" to see what would happen. The purple route immediately shifted from the superslabs to state highways and secondary roads. To fine tune the route I added small towns along the twisty road I wanted to ride. After a little trial and error I found it pretty easy to resort the list and get the scenic route I was after. It also has an option to avoid tool roads.

If you're planning a motorcycle ride and want to share your route or print it out you might want to give the Mapquest Route Builder a look.

News: Motorcycle Scams Abound

As the weather warms up and riding season approaches, the scam artists start coming out of the woodwork. It appears they've dusted off an old classic for this Spring: the Steal.

Classifieds across the `Net are being clogged with "giveaway" deals on desirable motorcycles. I spotted one on Craig's List just this week:

2001 BMW R1150 GS
low miles, system cases, only $2950

Huh? Must be a typo. Did he leave a 1 off the front? The photos showed a nifty yellow GS parked on a subsurban lawn. Could have been Anytown, USA. It sounded fishy but I contacted the "seller" just to see what the story was. The odor immediately got worse:
There are 12450 miles on it, the bike is in great condition, it has been properly maintained, never been dropped or abused in any way. It has clear title and the price I'm selling it for is $2950, which is including all the shipping charges.

I live in Tulsa but currently I am with work in UK, London for the next approximately 7 months. Anyway, there shouldn't be any problem, because I am using SafePay services so I can sell the bike without difficulty.
I left the bike at their warehouse before leaving to UK. They will take care of the delivery. There's a 10 days return policy so you will have the chance to test, inspect and ride it before final decision.

So if you want to purchase it, let me know and I will explain you how SafePay works and how we can move forward.
I am waiting your email.

Thanks

Beyond some obvious fishiness in the message text, I did a little investigating and found
I played along to learn the scam– although I had a pretty good idea. I gave him a bogus name and shipping address as his next message requested. A little later I received a very official looking e-mail claiming to be from Safe Pay Solutions. It looked entirely legit. But near the bottom was the red flag to end all red flags: Western Union!

Of couse, I thought, the same old ploy to get your cash.

When you send money via Western Union you have no recourse whatsoever. That's why it's the method of choice for scammers from Niagra Falls to Nigeria.

If it sounds too good to be true... but this one's for real!
Don't be too sure. And don't fall for giveaway deals on bikes, cars, airplanes or tractors. Do not click any links in messages from scammers. Here's what you should do:
Happy bargain hunting!

Vintage Bikes by the Bay

In the midst of San Francisco's fast-paced Financial District you'll find a unique corner bar called Eddie Rickenbacker's. Hanging from the ceiling are forty unique vintage motorcycles, most from the Twenties and Thirties.

The collection is eclectic, ranging from the ubiquitous Harleys to Clark Gable's Indian to a Danish sccot called a Nimbus.

Tag along as Bart Madson visits the bar the locals know for its Tiffany lamps, classic bikes and Indian teeth (but that's another story).

Next Shelby to be Two-Wheeler

Famed auto racer and builder Carroll Shelby is finally turning his attention to motorcycles.

According to Gizmag the 84 year-old tuner showed off a new bike at the Cincinnati V-Twin Expo. The project is a joint effort of Carroll Shelby International and Rucker Performance. Plans call for a production model to be available later this year offering riders 128 cubic inches pumping out 150 horses. The formula is classic Shelby, huge motor stuffed in a lightweight frame.

Rucker Performance would build the bikes at their facility in Fort Worth, Texas.

Oklahoma Motorcycling Mag Debuts

Oklahoma Motorcycling News
Pardon us while we divert the
national feed for some local content.

The first issue of a new magazine devoted to motorcycling in Oklahoma is set to debut February 3rd. James Pratt of Edmond, OK is the dynamo behind this bold endeavor known as Ride Oklahoma.

debut issue of Ride Oklahoma magazine“Man oh man, I am like a kid at Christmas, waiting on old Saint Nick,” James recently proclaimed in a message to Ride Oklahoma forum users. “I listen for the UPS truck to drive past, hoping he brings me a pallet full of magazines!”

The debut issue features articles on a variety of riding styles that showcase the wide range of Oklahoma's two-wheelers. From a track day at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit to coverage of the observed trials national event in Tishomingo— we're talking all types of motorcycling here. Our state has a wealth of diverse landscapes to enjoy by motorcycle. This magazine will be a great way to share them with other riders.

Realizing his dream has taken a lot of work. Besides all the effort that goes into creating a printed publication, he has faced challenges finding advertisers to support his dream. Visits to area bike dealers were often fruitless.

“Most were just lukewarm on advertising in a non-existent publication without a solid track record.”

With all the media we are confronted with day after day it's no wonder shops are skeptical. In this day and age any printed publication seems like a questionable venture. Hopefully once they see a glossy copy under thier nose they'll reconsider!

I hope all of you who ride in Oklahoma will consider subscribing.

Ride Oklahoma Magazine
Premiere Party:
February 3, 10:00 am at BMW of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City
February 3, 3:00 pm at K & N Motorcycles of Tulsa

More Militant Scooter Trash

Couldn't pass up sharing this gem from the Bizarre Two-Wheeler Department.

Military VespaThe folks over at the Dark Roasted Blend blog have a knack for finding mechanical oddities. And this French military Vespa would definitely qualify.

That's a 75mm recoilless rifle. Wow. We're not sure if it's mounted to the scooter or the scooter is mounted to it! About 800 of these were actually built and deployed. Adds new meaning to the term "backfire" doesn't it?

Riding Leather from the USA? It's True.

Save on American-Made Leathers

Believe it or not, all riding gear is not made in China.

For years we've been proud to feature Fox Creek Leather's catalog of products on our web site. They're a family-owned business in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and make some of the finest quality jackets, luggage, chaps and riding gloves you'll find.

Right now you can save on some of the most popular gear from Fox Creek. Like the 3/4 length ladies riding jacket. Buy it now for $349 and shipping is free.

Fox Creek Leather jackets are made from full grain naked leather which is supple and velvety smooth to touch. Because naked leather has only been dyed and is not finished, a dull luster highlights the unique detail of the jacket's grain. The suppleness of the leather allows it to hang naturally on your body and gives it a comfortable, almost familiar, fit the first time you wear it.

Browse their complete catalog: link
You'll also find affordable Cordura jackets, vented gear for warm weather and their newest line of reflective jackets.

Rand-McNally Ride Atlas Released

Ride Atlas Released

Rand McNally Introduces the Harley-Davidson® Ride Atlas
There are road trips and then there are rides. Rand McNally and Harley-Davidson know the difference: Cars take to the interstate for a road trip and bikers hit the back roads for a ride.

For the millions of motorcycle enthusiasts looking for adventure, Rand McNally introduces the first-edition Harley-Davidson® Ride Atlas of North America. Packed with definitive maps of secondary roads, road construction information, local motorcycle laws and an expansive mileage directory, the compact 8.5-inch by 11-inch ride atlas fits snugly into a saddlebag. Wrapped in a black, rubber-like, touché cover are 284 pages of four-color maps, mileage charts, city indexes and descriptions of motorcyclist-tested rides in the United States.

Rand McNally Travel Store

The Harley-Davidson Ride Atlas is packed with in-depth descriptions, custom trip maps and essential rider tips for 25 key rides nationwide. The scenic rides take motorcyclists off the beaten path — to the coves, hollows and water gaps of North Carolina's Blue Ridge Parkway, through the towering oaks and cedars of Texas Hill Country, and past the emerald lakes and swift streams of the Cascade Range in northern California.

Other unforgettable rides climb from the southern tip of Lake Superior toward the Canadian border along state Route 61, or hug the shoulders along the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway in Wyoming. Others meander through history along "The Trace" in the Land Between the Lakes in Kentucky and Tennessee. Still others cruise down a desert highway well-stocked with gas stations — but no roadwork — or crisscross the Rio Grande along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Each ride features its own map highlighting the route, nearby points of interest and geographic features. The rides also include useful touring information, suggested side trips, best seasons to ride, gasoline availability, road conditions, Web sites and phone numbers for state tourism resources, and other insider tips.

"We've enjoyed a long association with Harley-Davidson and were thrilled to partner with them on this exciting venture," said Laurie Borman, Rand McNally's editorial director. “For this book, we talked with Harley-Davidson riders about what they wanted and needed in a ride atlas and trip guide. The result — the Harley-Davidson Ride Atlas of North America — is the ultimate motorcycle enthusiast's book, incorporating the best of all the suggestions. Now motorcyclists have their own guide to know where to go, what to do, and how to get there and have fun doing it all."

Packed with features that enhance the rider's experience
"Our customers live for the time they spend out on the open road," said Tom Parsons, Harley-Davidson Acting General Manager of General Merchandise. "The all-in-one Ride Atlas features some of the most incredible rides in North America, hand-picked by Harley-Davidson and detailed by Rand McNally."

In addition to ride maps, the Ride Atlas contains reliable, detailed Rand McNally maps of each U.S. state, major U.S. cities, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico. The maps are tailored to riders' needs, with the minor highways and secondary roads highlighted in bold color. The 25 featured rides and other scenic routes also are highlighted brightly.

Each state map features listings, locations and phone numbers of Harley-Davidson dealerships, which also are indicated by symbols on the maps. Beside the maps are crucial state motorcycle laws and contacts for emergency roadside assistance, state motor vehicle information and tourism resources.

The Ride Atlas also features detailed border crossing information for Mexico and Canada, contacts for U.S. state parks and profiles of America's 10 most popular national parks. A mileage and minutes guide provides driving distances and times between major U.S. cities. It also includes information on Harley-Davidson factory tours, Rider's Edge ® - The Harley-Davidson Academy of Motorcycling, Harley-Davidson Authorized Rentals, the Harley Owners Group® and motorcycle shipping. The Ride Atlas will be available in May 2006 at authorized Harley-Davidson® dealerships, randmcnally.com, select bookstores, select automotive stores, truck stops and military outlets. Suggested retail price is $34.95

The fastest growing market segment for Harley-Davidson isn't Hell Angels or Bambis (Born-Again Middle Age Bikers). It's women. And you might be surprised to learn most of these women don't fit the typical ruffian stereotype.

More and more of the females hitting the open road are career women and retired professionals. While scooters are the most popular category with the fairer sex (about 25% of sales in 2003) a growing number of larger bikes are being purchased by women. Harley-Davidson sold about 23,000 bikes to women in 2003, up from only 600 in 1985!
