A new campaign from the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) has sparked controversy among some riders. The public service campaign, called "Think.Ride." is a series of short videos that encourage proper safety gear and safe, responsible riding practices, and discourages impaired riding and excessive exhaust sound. Another video tells car and truck drivers to watch out for motorcyclists on the road.
The video spots feature Perry King, actor and member of the AMA Board of Directors. This example encourages drivers to watch out for motorcyclists...
For the most part this campaign has been well received by the riding public.
However, some bikers have taken offense at AMA's efforts to curb excessive noise. Last year loud pipes were identified as one of the biggest threats to the motorcycle community by AMA's board.
The S1000RR even makes an appearance in the latest product placement extravaganza from the Black Eyed Peas- Imma Be Rocking that Body.
But the good news is this: it may be worth the hype!
Our first chance to ride the new Beemer was only a very short stint around town. Unfortunately not nearly enough time or road to really find out what this bike can do. But I could tell- the potential is awesome. You can read more on First Impressions: BMW S1000RR at the Two Wheel Oklahoma blog. Or just enjoy the video...
BMW's new superbike is causing quite a stir. It's not only a radical departure for BMW Motorrad, it's one hell of a motorcycle.
While we can't wait to get our hands on one, the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America are offering you a chance to do more than that. Way more.
For their Superbike Superstakes they are giving away a 2010 BMW S1000RR plus riding gear and 4 VIP tickets to the World Superbike race at Miller Motorsports Park. Tickets can be purchased for $10 a throw or by joining MOA. All in all 50 prize packages will be given away. Quite an impressive raffle!
The sweepstakes runs from February 1 through April 30, 2010. Ticket sales will be limited to 10,000 so you really do have a chance to win something cool in the Superbike Superstakes. If you've been thinking about joining- now is the time!
This weekend I watched some dirt track action for the first time in several years. It was the Tulsa stop for the 2010 AMA Arenacross Series and the venue was the BOK Center.
We cheered on the local boys- like Robbie Reynard and Corey Green- but in the end it was Tyler Bowers taking the top spot on the podium for the main event.
It was a great event and all the riders put on one hell of a show.
The latest trade rags are reporting that motorcycle and ATV sales are slowly recovering from their monumental slump. Sales of new bikes in November 2009 were down about 13% compared to the previous year. If that doesn't exactly sound like great news consider the number was about 35% just a few months previous. Regionally the west is faring the worst with an average slump in sales closer to 20%. By contrast, dealers in the northeast report sales are off less than 2%.
This downturn in the sales of new units has had an interesting effect on the market in general. Some buyers are more apt to consider a less costly pre-owned purchase. Dealers turned up the volume on their used inventory to meet the demands of price-conscience shoppers. Powersports auction houses are popping up across the country and finding new clientele in dealers who normally only worked their trade-ins.
I'm happy to announce that online versions of the television show Two Wheel Oklahoma are now being made available.
For about two years now I have worked closely with producer Brad Mathison on the first four episodes. Together we host the show and share our travels in and around Oklahoma with our viewers. Those viewers, up until recently, were concentrated in Northeast Oklahoma.
Our goal has been to create a motorcycle-centric travel show. Something those who ride would enjoy, but also something that might appeal to anyone who has ever taken a day-trip. We're working with a great group of people behind the camera and everyone has been more than supportive. So far the feedback we've received indicates we're on the right track.
It's split into 3 segments to simplify managing the video files. More episodes will follow over the coming weeks. Let us know what you think. Post a comment. Follow us on Facebook. Buy a t-shirt.
Who knows... maybe next year we'll be watching Two Wheel America?
Just got back from the 2009 Cycle World International Motorcycle Show in Dallas. This was the kickoff event for the 2009/2010 series and weather was beautiful, attendance looked great and a lot of new gear was on display. Here's a few highlights from the show floor...
Shoei Helmets
Shoei was showing off their new X-Twelve and XF-1100 helmets. The XF-1100 is the replacement for the XF-1000 and is a brand new new design aimed at the sport and/or touring rider. X-Twelve is for racing and offers all the protection and features the Big Boys have. Both of these helmets are made using five different shell sizes (like small, medium, large, etc.) to meet the new Snell M-2010 standard.
The Snell 2010 test is creating quite a stir for many manufacturers. The new test requires multiple shell sizes but many helmet makers only use two- or sometimes just one! Shoei and Arai have always used multiple shell sizes to make their helmets, which is just one reason they cost more. The Shoei rep told us each mold costs about $200,000. Now multiply that for five different sizes and you start to see why those no-name helmets are so cheap.

Cardo Scala Rider
We've reviewed the Cardo Q2 Bluetooth communicators here before. A new model called the G4 will hit the streets in about a month. This new version features a cleaner mounting system, simultaneous intercom between up to 4 people and extended range up to 1 mile. That range is accomplished by daisy-chaining from one unit to another. Sounds pretty trick. www.cardowireless.com
Wunderlich BMW only shows up at a handful of the IMS series, unfortunately Dallas isn't one of them. But all us lonely Beemer riders found something to lust for at the Wunderlich truck. These folks make all sorts of expensive tidbits to tart up your BMW.
GS riders should consider their catalog required reading. Protection items are a big part of their inventory- but they also offer some cool dress-up parts too. Want to impress your friends? Pronounce Wunderlich in proper German: voonder- lish. www.wunderlichamerica.com
BMW seems to be getting really serious about this sportbike thing. Witness their latest concept bike. It's a six cylinder wild child called simply Concept 6.
Fascination, Supremacy and Riding Comfort with Six Cylinders
That's how BMW Motorrad describe the two-wheeled six banger. But this isn't just some paper mache concept show rig. Production is planned for the very near future and the first model promised is a new luxo touring rig to replace the K1200LT.
However, showing off a rad new motor like this in some moto-barge wouldn't be very exciting now would it? Of course not. Instead the boys in Munich decided to offer us a space-age cafe racer to show off the Concept 6.
Supremacy and dynamism are also borne out clearly by the thrilling design of the Concept 6 and, as usual, this project from BMW Motorrad is more than “just” the attempt to develop a motorcycle of a kind never seen before.
Working on Concept 6, the designers at BMW Motorrad have therefore focused yet again on technical function and quality and, in particular, the emotional element bringing together man and machine. Their rule, quite simply, is that a motorcycle must not only follow the laws of functionality, but also arouse emotion in all its facets. In a nutshell, therefore, the machine must be simply thrilling.

BMW announced a special version of their F800 series inspired by European stunt pilot Chris Pfeiffer. The F800R is the latest naked bike from the Motorrad and features the same parallel twin that powers the popular bike-of-the-year F800GS.
The new "Chris Pfeiffer" version guarantees you'll be a wheelie-popping, burnout meister in no time. Here's the special bits on the new BMW F 800 R Chris Pfeiffer model:
• No cockpit fairing • Spring of rear spring strut finished in red • Painted pillion passenger seat cover • Front wheel finished in white • Clear overpainted Chris Pfeiffer signature on the central cover. • Set of sponsor stickers supplied • LED direction indicators • Akrapović® rear silencer for a dynamic appearance and a sporty sound • Highly sporty visual appearance with paint finish in the BMW Motorsport colors of Alpine White non-metallic, Lupine Blue metallic and Magma Red non-metallic, contrasting with elements in black silk matte

Nevada Magazine has released a new edition of the Nevada Rides Motorcycle Guide. Formerly published by the Nevada Commission on Tourism, the new edition offers maps of favorite roads plus motorcycling events.
The guide is offered online or on paper as a pocket-sized 29 page reference. In addition to boring stuff, like helmet laws, advertisements and such, the guide features rides in five sections of Nevada: Valley of Fire, Rock Canyon, Lake Tahoe, Lamoille Canyon and Lincoln County.
To view the free online version use the following link:
Want More? Of course you do. You can peruse other travel guides for the Silver State at www.travelnevada.com. My favorite reference for finding the road (or trail) less traveled is DeLorme's Nevada Atlas & Gazetteer series. If you're more interested in the Sierra Nevadas than Nevada the most spiffy take-along is Mad Maps' Gold Country Scenic Tours
And don't forget- after you find the best road in Nevada come back and post your favorite ride!
One of my favorite online mags is Winding Road. It's not about motorcycles- it's an ezine for those that enjoy cool cars, techie stuff and spirited driving. What's not to love?
They wanted to do something special for their Summer issue- so they divvied up the US and started listing their favorite winding roads by region. They called it simply, The Road Trip Issue.
Now if you're like me, you love to find out about a twisty road- especially one you've never heard of before! So check it out at wrmag.nextautos.com/issue/1000
If you typically avoid eBay Motors fearing the long-distance deal, shipping fiasco or scary escrow services, you might want to reconsider. All that may soon be a thing of the past. The online marketplace has recently made some drastic changes to accommodate local buyers and sellers. In fact, you can even list your vehicle for free!
Right now eBay is offering registered users up to six classifieds per year for no listing fee. That means you can list your motorcycle, car, truck, SUV, four-wheeler or personal watercraft locally or nationally for free. You don't even have to pay the "successful listing fee" unless you list more than four vehicles. This special offer is being advertised as available through July 15, 2009.
Improvements have been made for buyers too. eBay's new Get Local initiative makes localized searches for used bikes and cars easier and more intuitive. Local dealers mix it up also, just in case you might want to consider a shiny, new ride instead. Major metropolitan areas have special landing pages, or you can search by zip code to locate vehicles in a 100 mile radius (you can zero it in tighter if you like).
Conclusion So far we are liking the changes on eBay Motors. My one complaint might be it's a little too "car-centric." But that's my perennial gripe with most online classifieds. eBay has made a smart move by recognizing the value of classifieds. A large percentage of auction listings were nothing more than classifieds. By making these changes eBay seems to be acknowledging that fact and tuning into user's needs. The big question comes after that promotional period ends: How much?
Want to know more? Joseph Sinclair has done an excellent job guiding newbies through the potential pitfalls in his book, eBay Motors: the Smart Way.

Last month the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) announced a new sound level test for street motorcycles. The test, touted as simple and economical, is based on a procedure that originated for off-road motorcycles.
Over the last few years it's become increasingly evident the motorcycling community will not police itself. Replacement or removal of stock mufflers has become the norm for retro bikes and cruisers. The practice is further perpetuated by the myth that "loud pipes save lives." A simple and consistent method to measure tailpipe noise has been sorely needed.
"The AMA maintains that few factors contribute more to misunderstanding and prejudice against street riders than excessively noisy motorcycles," Ed Moreland stated. "With the new SAE J2825 standard, street motorcyclists can now determine how quiet, or loud, their bikes really are."
Recently we've seen cumbersome regulations enacted as communities across the country seek to curb excessively loud bikes. Several states and municipalities have considered or enacted regulations to nix any aftermarket muffler or pipe. But these outright bans on any modification to an OEM exhaust system are hard to enforce and virtually impossible for many owners to comply with. Hopefully this test will offer a viable option to such ordinances.
The standard is identified by SAE as J2825, "Measurement of Exhaust Sound Pressure Levels of Stationary On-Highway Motorcycles." This new test requires holding a calibrated sound meter 20 inches from the bike's exhaust tip, then taking readings at various RPM ranges. A magic number of 92 decibels at idle and 96 dBA or 100 dBA at higher RPM, depending on the number of cylinders, is recommended by SAE.

According to a recent consumer survey, customer satisfaction with motorcycle helmets is at an all-time high, and one brand in particular continues to set the pace year after year.
In conducting the 2009 Motorcycle Helmet Satisfaction Study, which measures the overall satisfaction of motorcyclists with their new helmet in three key factors: ventilation, face shield, and design and styling, J.D. Power and Associates asked owners to rate the following 11 attributes of their motorcycle helmet:
* quietness; * ventilation/air flow; * de-fogging; * face shield ability to keep wind out; * face shield ability to resist scratching; * ease of replacing face shield; * scratch resistance of shell; * color/graphic design; * weight; * ease of fastening the strap; * fit and comfort.
When results of the more than 4,600 survey responses were tabulated, the industry score of 766 (on a 1,000-point scale) not only eclipsed last year’s result by five points, but also marked the highest score since the study’s inception in 1999.
When analyzing scores for the individual helmet brands, one in particular stands out. With a score of 830, Arai ranks highest among the 10 helmet brands included in the study—its 11th consecutive year leading the rankings. “Arai’s focus on fit and comfort—the most important consideration when purchasing a motorcycle helmet—and its ability to cater to different types of riders have given the manufacturer a consistent edge in satisfying customers,” said Tim Fox, research manager of the powersports group at J.D. Power and Associates.
Other highlights from the 2009 Motorcycle Helmet Satisfaction Study include:
* Arai, the highest-ranked helmet maker, improves its index score by 11 points compared to last year’s study, and performs particularly well in the ventilation and design and styling factors. * Shoei ranks second with a score of 815 and performs well in the face shield factor. Icon ranks third overall with a score of 806. * While the percentage of helmet owners who conducted research online before buying has remained relatively steady from 2008 at 36 percent, more and more consumers are buying their helmets online—17 percent in 2009, compared to 14 percent in 2008. * Those who purchased more expensive helmets ($200 or more) are more likely to both research and purchase their helmet online. Additionally, more than one-half of these helmet owners researched online prior to their purchase, and 22 percent of them made their purchase online.
About the Study The 2009 Motorcycle Helmet Satisfaction Study is based on responses from more than 4,600 purchasers of new 2008 model-year motorcycles who provided information about their most recent helmet purchase experience and helmet use. The study was fielded in September and October 2008.

Motorcycle Superstore has just made tire buying easier. Comparison shopping for tires online can be frustrating. Shipping charges and sales tax have to be considered. Then there's installation charges. Some bike shops even charge more to mount tires you carry in. And asking a local shop to mount up a set of tires you just mail ordered can be an uncomfortable experience.
Old Idea, New Market For years now we've been ordering tires for our car and having them shipped to and mounted by a local installer. The Tire Rack has offered this service for years. But now Motorcycle Superstore has taken the same idea and applied it to bikes. They've teamed up with competent installers across the US and now offer their Preferred Installer Program.
Participating shops are rated and referred by customers just like you. Look for the Superstar Installer to find the shops receiving the highest customer ratings.
Now you can order tires, exhaust or a Power Commander and have it shipped directly to a shop near you. You schedule an appointment, the ride in for installation. You get parts at Motorcycle Superstore's guaranteed best price, great service and no hassle installation. What's not to love?

Buell Motorcycles are offering a free tire gauge. But only if you're bold enough to carry a coupon into your local dealer.
Seriously. No catch.
It's a spiffy little pencil-style gauge on a karabiner key chain (which is really pretty cool on its own). And get this- it's even got a Buell logo! Imagine that.
Just visit Buell's special promo page and print off the coupon, then rush to your nearest Buell dealer. While you're there slobber on an 1125R for me.
We're strolling along and then we spotted the latest offering from Bombardier- the Can Am Spyder. They call the three-wheeler a "reverse trike" and plan on selling a gob of them to people looking for wind in their face, without the balance issues of a motorcycle.
KTM is showing off their new 2009 RC8, the second generation of their orange land rocket. We asked Chuck Wehr, KTM North America, to give us a quick walk around of the new superbike.
Here's a clever gadget for anyone with a crowded garage. The "park 'n move" is a low-profile platform on four casters that is made to support your bike's center stand. Pop your bike up on the platform and it will roll around with ease. Now, maybe you can fit that other bike in the garage!
Aaron Zimmermann from Legal Speeding gave us the lowdown on this down low dolly for mobile motorcycles.
Jackie and I made a quick jaunt down to Dallas for the Cycle World International Motorcycle Show. The show was good, heavy on scooters and light on attendance. But several new bikes were on display and we spotted some very cool new products.
Stay tuned, over the next few weeks we'll be posting some of the highlights and must-see displays you won't want to miss when you visit the show.

"You see things vacationing on a motorcycle in a way that is completely different from any other.
In a car you're always in a compartment, and because you're used to it you don't realize that through
that car window everything you see is just more TV. You're a passive observer and it is all moving
by you boringly in a frame."
